Description
KPRC 2 is looking for an Audience Growth Strategist to help shape the future of local journalism. This role sits at the intersection of journalism, audience behavior, and platform strategy - helping our newsroom create content that is not only informative, but genuinely useful, relevant, and impactful in a rapidly changing media environment.
We believe great journalism alone is no longer enough. Stories must be clearly framed, thoughtfully packaged, and strategically distributed in ways that connect with modern audiences across streaming, mobile, social, and digital platforms.
Reporting to the Marketing Director and working closely with newsroom leadership, this role will help shape how stories are prioritized, presented, optimized, and distributed across platforms. You'll collaborate daily with reporters, producers, digital teams, photographers, and creatives to strengthen audience connection and help our journalism reach more people in more meaningful ways.
Because this role is deeply collaborative and embedded in the daily editorial process, this is an on-site position based in Houston.
This is not a traditional social media role. It is a strategic position focused on growing audience habits, strengthening story impact, and helping evolve how local journalism serves the community.
What You'll Do
- Partner with newsroom and marketing teams to identify stories with the strongest audience impact and engagement potential.
- Help shape story framing, packaging, headlines, thumbnails, captions, and presentation across platforms.
- Develop platform-specific strategies for social, streaming, mobile, YouTube, and emerging digital spaces.
- Use audience insights, analytics, and platform behavior to guide content decisions and improve performance.
- Identify opportunities during breaking news and major events to maximize reach, relevance, and engagement in real time.
- Experiment with new storytelling formats, workflows, and audience strategies.
- Help newsroom staff better understand audience behavior, digital best practices, and platform trends through clear, practical coaching.
- Contribute to a newsroom culture focused not just on producing content but creating journalism that people genuinely value and return to.
We're Looking for Someone Who
- Wants to help reinvent how local journalism connects with communities.
- Thinks strategically about how stories are consumed in today's media environment.
- Understands both journalism and audience behavior.
- Has strong instincts for what makes people stop, watch, click, share, and come back.
- Can balance editorial judgment with creativity, experimentation, and data-informed decision-making.
- Is collaborative, curious, adaptable, and comfortable influencing across teams.
- Thrives in fast-moving environments where priorities shift quickly and breaking news matters.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, media studies, or related field or equivalent job experience.
- Experience in audience development, digital content strategy, social storytelling, newsroom growth, or platform strategy.
- Strong understanding of digital and social platforms including YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, streaming, and mobile.
- Experience using analytics and audience insight tools to inform content strategy and decision-making.
- Excellent writing, editorial, and communication skills.
- Experience with short-form video, visual packaging, or digital storytelling workflows is a plus.
- Knowledge of SEO, headline strategy, and content optimization best practices are helpful.
- Passion for local journalism and serving audiences in meaningful ways.
Bilingual English/Spanish skills are a plus, but not required.
